Zach LaVine ‘has fans’ in the Mavericks front office

During NBA Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks got an age-old Luka Doncic performance in an improbable come-from-behind victory over the New York Knicks. The Mavericks trailed by nine points with 33 seconds left before forcing into overtime, where they came away with a 126–121 win.

Doncic forced overtime after securing the rebound from his planned free throw miss. While hanging in the air, he sank a shot in one move, tying the game. It was just one of many spectacular plays he made, as he finished the game with 60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists.

He is the first player in NBA history to reach these numbers in a historic game. Dallas has now won four games in a row, but if there’s any caveats to that performance and this season, it’s clear the Mavericks need Doncic more help.

Christian Wood has been very good since being placed in the starting line-up, but Dallas doesn’t look like a contender the way he is currently built. There’s only so much Doncic can do as he’s already looked worn out at times this season and we’re not even half way through.

What kind of move could Dallas make? If it goes further south for the Chicago Bulls, the Mavericks could be one of the teams entering the potential Zach LaVine sweepstakes. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon during an appearance on the Lowe Post podcasthas LaVine fans within the Mavericks organization.

“I just know there are fans of his who are in prominent positions within the Mavericks,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said on the Lowe Post podcast. “Again, I’m not here to tell you that there’s a big consensus. I think there are enough fans of his that I wouldn’t rule it out completely.”

LaVine would certainly help make up for some of the shortcomings in the roster. They failed to replace Jalen Brunson’s handling and scoring and that’s a role LaVine could thrive in alongside Doncic as he’s more than capable of being the go-to option for a long time.

Given his questionable long-term health with a weak knee and his contract, the Mavericks could bid for him if Chicago sees moving him more as a paycheck than asset-gathering. If they decide to restructure, DeMar DeRozan could be seen as their main attraction for asset collection along with Nikola Vucevic’s expiring contract.
