WPL 2023 [Twitter reactions]: Laura Wolvaardt, Ashleigh Gardner drive Gujarat to a thrilling victory over Delhi

In the 14th match of Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, Gujarat Giants (GG) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) Thursday at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Chasing 148, the game went to the wire, where the Capitals were bundled for 136 and lost the game by 11 runs. Marizanne Cap scored highest for Delhi with 36 from 29 using 4 fours and a six before running out.

Arundhati Reddy kept Delhi in the hunt and took the game deep, but Kim Garth fired her at age 25, worsening the Capitals. Garth took two wickets for 18 runs in her 4 overs quota, while Gardner took a pair for 19 runs.

Earlier, Laura Wolvaardt And Ashleigh Gardner took Gujarat to a competitive total. The Sneh Rana-led side previously lost to Sophia Dunkley in the first over Harleen Deol and Wolvaardt teamed up midway through the leg for a 49 run first wicket partnership.

Yes Jonas dismissed Deol (31) in the 10th over, but Wolvaardt continued to score runs and was well supported by Gardner. The duo eventually formed a stand of 81 runs to propel Gujarat to a respectable total. The Proteas opener hit 57 off 45 balls, including 6 fours and a six, while Gardner hit an unbeaten 51 off 33 deliveries, using nine bounds.

“This was the game I was looking for. I felt I was being inconsistent but today the performance was good with bat and ball. Striking the right balance. We talked about losing too many wickets in bunches so the idea was to give ourselves time because in India we can make up ground quickly. As the tournament has progressed spin has played a big role. It’s a bit slower off the wicket so we can bowl our natural lengths. said Gardner after the game.
