WPL 2023 [Twitter reactions]: Harmanpreet Kaur captain’s knock helps MI beat GG and reach WPL playoffs

Gujarat giants (GG) interlocked horns with Mumbai Indians (MI) in competition no. 12 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (March 14).

Asked to bat first, MI lost their first wicket by just one run on the board. However, they staged a strong comeback, posting a competitive total of 162 for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Harmanpreet Kaur top scorer for her team, scoring a brilliant 51 off 30 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. Supported by Nat Sciver-Brunt (36), Yastica Bhatia also contributed 44 crucial runs to the MI total. In the meantime, Ashleigh Gardner took three wickets for GG and gave away just 34 runs in her four overs quota.

In reply, Gujarat also did not start well and regularly lost wickets. Harleen Deol played a bouncy 22-run knock for her team, but couldn’t sail through. GG eventually lost the match by 55 runs they managed just 109/9 in 20 overs.

On the other hand, Scier-Brunt and Hayley Matthews scalped three wickets each for the MI and helped the Mumbai-based team maintain their dominance by recording a fifth consecutive victory in the tournament. Harmanpreet was named ‘Player of the Match’ for her exceptional half-century hitting.

With the win, Mumbai kept its top spot in the WPL 2023 points table becoming the first team to qualify for the play-offs, as Gujarat remained in fifth place in the team standings with just one win in their last five encounters.
