WPL 2023 [Twitter reactions]: Delhi clinical capitals beat down Mumbai Indians to top table

In the battle of heavyweights, Delhi Capitals (DC) got the upper hand over Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 18 of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Monday.

Bowling first, the Capitals were right on the money, instantly causing MI to collapse. DC’s bowling unit’s dominant show featuring, among others Marizanne Kapp (13/2), Shikha Pandey (21/2) And Jess Jonassen (2/25) gave Mumbai no chance to get back into the match.

Pooja Vastrakarwith 26 from 19, including 3 fours and a six, was Mumbai’s highest scorer as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side could only reach 109/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, the Capitals got off to a flying start, with Shafali Verma beating the MI bowlers from the start. She added 56 runs for the skippered opening wicket Mega Lanning before being dismissed for a rapid-fire 33 off 15 balls.

The showstopper, however, was the young star Alice Capsey which picked up from where Shafali left and took Mumbai bowlers to the cleaners. She tasted Hayley Matthews for three sixes in an over as Capitals chased down target in 9 overs and MI led on net run rate to take first place in the points table.

“It was a great match, hard to fault. We got away well with the bowl, Kapp got us another great start and to chase like that was great. (About Kapp) She’s very talented, always excited to play well and see her perform so well, very happy for her. I think the bowlers did it for us tonight, to narrow them down to about 100 was great. (On orange cap) I was quite happy with the blue, not too concerned about this sort of thing. I just want a repeat performance like that, hitting good, bowling good and hopefully getting another win,” said Lanning after the game.
