Tottenham report: Brendan Rodgers drops hint James Maddison move imminent

Tottenham Hotspur could sign James Maddison – and now even Brendan Rodgers has admitted his talisman could be leaving.
Maddison has been in sparkling form for the Foxes this season, earning a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad before the winter break and helping to drag Rodgers’ struggling side away from the drop zone. The No. 10 has long been associated with Spurs, along with Arsenal and Newcastle United, with performances this season only fueling rumors of a move to a club in Europe.
Now Rodgers – who inherited Maddison when he took over King Power Stadium in 2019 – has dropped some football.london (opens in new tab) have described as a “huge hint” that an exit for his star man could be imminent.
“It’s getting harder and harder,” Rodgers told reporters. “The financial resources, not just in the top six, make it really difficult. Clubs have multiple cash injections. We have one owner and one family.
“Every year it gets harder. It doesn’t soften our ambition to be super competitive.”
Previously, Leicester had been determined Maddison was not for sale, reportedly turning Arsenal down in 2021 as they hunted for a creative force in midfield. The East Midlanders apparently then demanded about £60 million (opens in new tab), with Mikel Arteta and co. choosing to back out of a deal and target Martin Odegaard at half price.
With Tottenham currently severely lacking in creativity and fans annoyed by ownership and their lack of investment, Maddison would be the perfect answer to the dissatisfaction (opens in new tab). The Lilywhites apparently only have about £30 million to spend this month.
With the top four uncertain this season, the Spurs board could follow last summer’s example by investing more money in the playing team to support Antonio Conte.
Maddison is valued at 55 million euros Transfer market (opens in new tab).
