This Hornets-Warriors Trade features Jordan Poole

NBA Analytics Network

An NBA writer suggests the Golden State Warriors trade shooting guard Jordan Poole for the Charlotte Hornets this summer.

Our own James Piercey of NBA Analysis Network suggested that the Warriors send Poole and send Jonathan Kuminga to the Hornets for All-Star swingman Gordon Hayward and two future draft picks.

“Yes. The Hornets are currently torn. Most NBA fans want them to select Scoot Henderson with the second overall pick. Still, the organization seems to be leaning towards Brandon Miller,” Piercey wrote. “That’s understandable. Henderson may be the better candidate, but Miller is quite attractive in his own right. Meanwhile, Henderson plays the same position as LaMelo Ball.

“Poole, on the other hand, is more of a goalscorer. If the Hornets chose Miller and made this deal, they would assemble their backcourt of the future and land their new starting small forward.

Poole signed a four-year, $128 million extension with the Warriors in October 2022. The extension will start next season. The Michigan product averaged a career-high 20.4 points this season for the Warriors while shooting 43.0% from the field, 33.6% from beyond the arc, and 87.0% from the free throw line.

However, Poole was unable to carry over his regular season success into the postseason. In 13 playoff games against the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers, Poole averaged 10.3 points while shooting an inefficient 34.1% overall and 25.4% from 3-point range. The Warriors, who won the championship against the Boston Celtics last season, lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals in six games, with Poole only averaging 8.3 points in the series.

It looks like Poole could be back with the Warriors next season despite his post-season struggles. According to Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athleticthe Dubs are hesitant to trade Poole this summer for a number of reasons.

“There is still hesitation to move him,” Slater and Charania wrote. “Jordan Poole has averaged 20.4 points this season and has powerful offensive capabilities that are missing from the roster under Curry and will be needed as the squad matures. Is it wise to move away from that when his value is at its lowest in 12 months? Will the money crisis dictate it?

Before the 2022–23 season started, Draymond Green punched Poole in the face and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr believes this incident ruined “confidence” in the team.

“Some of that (chemistry) has definitely been lost this year,” Kerr said during his exit interview. “You can’t hide from it. The incident with Draymond and Jordan at the beginning of this year played a role in this. It’s hard not to have that impact on a team… Every time some trust is lost, it makes the process that much more difficult and some trust was lost. That’s as blunt as I can be.”
