Argentina dramatically won the World Cup by beating France in what was arguably one of the greatest finals of all time. Lionel Messi and co. defeated the 2018 champions on penalties after finishing 3–3 in extra time.
Argentina led the game with two early goals in the first half, but a quick Kylian Mbappe double ten minutes from time meant the game would go to extra time. Messi gave his side a 3-2 lead, but Mbappé responded again with his second penalty of the evening to restore the tie 2 minutes from time.
However, it was the South American side that was victorious in the shootout thanks to Emiliano Martinez’s heroics.
Telemundo calls the winning penalty kick
Telemundo’s Andres Cantor, who commentated during the final, couldn’t contain his emotions as Gonzalo Montiel stepped forward to score his penalty that gave the Albiceleste their third World Cup title, their first since 1986.
Born in Buenos Aires, Cantor cried with joy after Argentina’s epic triumph. The 59-year-old has covered the World Cup since 1990 and is iconic “GOOOOOOOOLLLLL” statement has become a household story among American viewers.
Tears of joy
Cantor, grabbing hold of his broadcast partner, burst into tears as he yelled, “ARGENTINA CAMPEON DE MUNDO!” that translates to “Argentina, champions of the world.”
Cantor’s appeal has gone viral on social media and one that would go down in history to immortalize the occasion when Lionel Messi finally fulfilled his dream of winning the biggest trophy in world football.
The Argentine-born commentator joined NBC’s broadcast team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has become an asset to both English and Spanish broadcasts of major events around the world.
Translated into English, Cantor’s heartfelt words were: “GOOOOOOAL, Argentina is the champion. Argentina is world champion. Argentina is WORLD CHAMPION. They did it from the air.
You did it, players. They won heaven. Argentina is world champion. Messi is the world champion. It couldn’t be otherwise. Argentina. The Argentina selection of Lionel Scaloni is world champion. Argentina. Argentina is world champion. 36 years of waiting. Argentina, Argentina is the world champion.”
