NBA Analytics Network

Things are going exactly as planned as the San Antonio Spurs laid it out in the offseason. After toiling as a bottom-ranking playoff team and competing in the NBA Play-In Tournament for a few seasons, the Spurs decided to completely rebuild this offseason.

All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray was traded to the Atlanta Hawks for Danilo Gallinari, who didn’t even land in San Antonio before being waived, and three draft picks. The Spurs are looking to the future as they are real players in the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Many people in the basketball world expect the Spurs to be busy again closing deals before the deadline. Three players in particular are being watched; Veterans Doug McDermott, Josh Richardson and Jakob Poeltl.

At 30, 29 and 27 years old, they are the oldest players in the Spurs rotation this season. All three have different levels of interest in the competition Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.

Poeltl would probably be the most expensive of the three to acquire. San Antonio is reportedly looking for two first-round picks in exchange for him, which is a price they will hold on to as there is some interest in working out a long-term deal. The LA Clippers, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers are three teams named by Pincus as possible suitors.

Poeltl is set to his unrestricted free choice and there is reportedly some mutual interest in continuing the partnership beyond this season. San Antonio like the fit Poeltl would have next to Wembanyama if the Spurs were lucky enough to select him.

McDermott has one more season after this contract, which makes him a little less attractive as a trading ship. However, his 3-point shooting is something contending teams would love to add to their roster.

Richardson, who also has an expiring contract, seems the most likely player to move. He is the quintessential 3-and-D winger, versatile enough to defend multiple positions and has shooting and play skills in attack.
