US Soccer has announced plans for the SheBelieves Cup in 2023. The tournament originated in 2016 and was introduced as an inspirational movement to help young women and girls achieve their dreams.
Brazil, Canada and Japan join the United States in the 2023 version of the competition. The four-team tournament will be held from February 16 to 22 at three different locations across the country.
Exploria Stadium in Orlando, GEODIS Park in Nashville and Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas will serve as host stadiums.
The team faces tough competition ahead of the World Cup
USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski claimed the tournament’s competition will help prepare his team for the Women’s Soccer World Cup.
“The first five games of the 2023 schedule will all be against teams playing in the World Cup and we expect to confirm a few more games against top opponents before we head to New Zealand in the summer.” said the coach.
Next month, the Americans will play against New Zealand, co-host of the World Cup, for two friendly matches. Then the USWNT will play the three SheBelieves tournament teams the following month.
“We love the SheBelieves Cup for the world-class competition it brings, the format that helps replicate group play at a World Cup, and the overall significance it has for our team and women’s sports,” Andonovski continued.
“Of course you get more rest days at a World Cup, but managing a squad with three games over seven days against teams with three very different playing styles is really good preparation for us as we continue to grow as a team towards next summer.”
Cup is round-robin format
The winner of the SheBelieves Cup is determined by points. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. Goal difference will obviously be the first tiebreaker involved in determining a winner.
Brazil will face Japan in the opening game of the tournament.
Team USA kicks off their cup run against Canada in Orlando. The USWNT then plays Japan in Nashville and finally Japan in Frisco, Texas.
Ticket sales are a bit confusing as a series of pre-sale events begin on Monday, December 12. However, tickets for the general public will eventually be available for purchase on Tuesday, December 20.
While Warner Bros. Discovery Sports previously signed an eight-year deal to broadcast USMNT and USWNT games, HBO Max and/or TNT will broadcast the 2023 SheBelieves Cup.
A specific television schedule will be released at a later date.
