Roma saves late draw to refuse Milan

AS Roma scored two late goals at San Siro on Sunday night to salvage a 2-2 draw against defending champions AC Milan.

The home side had no shot on target until the 87e minute, but Roger Ibanez and Tammy Abraham scored in the dying minutes to deal a huge blow to Milan in their quest to retain their title.

Champions the better side

The defending champions were by far the better side on the night, playing to their boisterous fans as Roma barely got into the game.

Pierre Kalulu put the home side ahead with a header in the 30e minute that Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio got a hand but couldn’t keep it out.

Milan tested Roma on several occasions and would have been disappointed not to go into half time with a bigger lead as Olivier Giroud and Brahim Diaz had chances to score.

Milan dominated after the break with Rafael Leao firing over from a tricky angle, while Patricio somehow managed to fend off Theo Hernandez’s long range effort with his chest.

Alexis Saelemaekers was then awarded a penalty which was waved off by the referee minutes after Giroud fired his header directly at Patricio.

The Rossoneri scored their second of the night as substitute Tomasso Pobega reeled in a brilliant team move inside the box from 12 yards out.

Ten minutes later, Roma got a lifebuoy from Ibanez who blasted in his free header from a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner kick.

This was the away team’s first shot on goal in the match. The Giallorossi then came close to death when Abraham was the quickest to react to a shot on the rebound after Nemanja Matic’s header was saved from close range by Milan keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.

Milan trail Napoli

The result means that Milan are third on the table tied with Juventus on points, but 7 points behind league leaders Napoli, who beat Sampdoria 2-0 earlier on Sunday.

Speaking of the result, Milan manager Stefan Pioli said: “It’s a huge shame to come out of this game with just one point, that’s for sure. After a game like that, we tell the players to keep playing like this, but games end in the 95th minute and you have to stay focused all the time.”

“When you get two goals on setplays, where we knew our opponents were very strong, that meant more focus was needed. It’s difficult to talk to the team at the moment as we played well and until the 87th fully deserved to win that minute, but then made life difficult for ourselves.”
