Raptors sitting on huge OG Anunoby trade offer

NBA Analytics Network

The Toronto Raptors are a franchise that will receive a lot of attention in the coming weeks as the NBA trade deadline approaches. They have failed to make up ground in the Eastern Conference standings in recent weeks, leading to speculation that some major moves could be ahead before the February 9 trade deadline.

There’s a lot of talent on the Raptors’ roster, but they lack that bona fide go-to star. That’s probably why they’ve checked in with the likes of Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell this offseason to fix that. Unfortunately, no deal has been made and now they come to a crossroads over their future.

Do they want to strengthen the squad and make a run for the playoffs this season? That could push them into luxury tax territory as several key rotation players could become free agents this summer.

If the front office decides it’s time to shake things up and rebuild the roster, there will be no lack of interest in their players. Toronto would throw the trading market for a loop and make Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr., Pascal Siakam or OG Anunoby available in a trade. According to Bruce Arthur of TheStar.comthe Raptors already have a huge offer on the table in exchange for Anunoby.

Want to move one core piece? You have four available, and the differences in potential returns between Gary Trent Jr., VanVleet, Anunoby, and Pascal Siakam range from minor upgrades to a bejeweled haul. Do you want to be Oklahoma City, with cliques in bunches? At least one team has previously offered three first-round picks for Anunoby, and Siakam is worth more. Trading both would be an almost total reset around Scottie Barnes.

It was previously reported that Trent was the most likely of the Raptors’ core players to be traded. But given the opt-out in his contract, it can be argued that he would return the least amount of assets in a trading package.

Anunoby is on the other end of that spectrum, as a three-pick trading package from the first round is nothing to scoff at. Depending on the protection they got, that would make him as valuable in the trade market as Dejounte Murray was to the San Antonio Spurs when they traded him to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Indiana product is enjoying a breakout season as a two-way star and Defensive Player of the Year candidate, while staying healthy and once again improving his efficiency. He fits the prototype of what franchises are looking for as a wing to build their roster around, so it makes sense that the asking price for him would be astronomical.

If Toronto wants to go down the winding down route, the opportunity has presented itself. If they are unable to climb back to at least a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament in the next week or so before the deadline, it will increase the chances of some big moves north of the border.
