Pacers can trade for Knicks’ Cam Reddish?

NBA Analytics Network

The direction the Indiana Pacers take ahead of the NBA trade deadline will be determined in the coming weeks. They have outperformed expectations so far with a 15-15 record and are currently ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference. They’ve been above .500 for as many as four games this season, so they’re experiencing a bit of a dip after some early season spikes.

If they continue down this path, Indiana could change their plans early in the season. Many assumed they would be sellers, looking for the remaining veterans on the roster to continue rebuilding and supplying future assets. But if a playoff spot is within reach, the property may have a different idea.

Given their current status, it would be unrealistic to expect the Pacers to go all-in, as the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves or Cleveland Cavaliers did in the off-season by acquiring Dejounte Murray, Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. Instead, they could look for younger players with an edge and a different environment.

One player who would fit into that picture is Cam Reddish of the New York Knicks. Reddish was the Hawks’ No. 10 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He couldn’t find his footing during his time there, but his performance in the 2021 NBA Postseason against the Milwaukee Bucks showed his potential.

He petitioned the Hawks for a trade to a situation that would give him more playing time and was traded to New York last season. He hasn’t found that bigger role with the Knicks yet and could be on the road again.

If there’s one thing the Pacers lack in their recent adjustment, it’s a long-term answer to the wing. The backcourt looks good for years to come with Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin. In the frontcourt are Jalen Smith and Isaiah Jackson. First round pick 2021 Chris Duarte has taken a step back in his second season and is already 25.

Reddish turned 23 in September and has been showing some of that alluring ability this season with the Knicks. He is a versatile defender who can play in multiple positions given his combination of size, height and athleticism. That elite 3-and-D potential is there, but Reddish is already adept at breaking down his defender and reaching the edge and finishing.

The biggest problem Reddish is facing right now is an inconsistent engine. If a head coach can figure out how to make sure he stays engaged at all times, there’s a lot of talent to work with. A more consistent roll could help unlock that, as the Pacers can find a lot more minutes for Reddish than the Knicks.
