Nottingham Forest welcomes Manchester United to the City Ground for the first time in 24 years, where the two sides meet in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
This is Forest’s first appearance in the last four of the League Cup (or any major domestic cup for that matter) since 1992 – when they reached the final, only to lose to… Man United. Steve Cooper’s side have been in quite a bit of trouble since the World Cup and the underdogs will hope an exuberant home crowd can help them take control of this game.
For United, meanwhile, it is the third Carabao Cup semi-final in four seasons, although they have fallen over this hurdle the last two times (both times against Manchester City). The visitors suffered their first defeat since the World Cup by losing late to Arsenal last time out, and Erik ten Hag will expect a reaction as he moves United closer to a first final in a competition since the 2018 FA Cup final want to bring.
The kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.
Team news
Forest will be missing six players for one of the biggest games in their recent history. Omar Richards, Moussa Niakhate, Cheikhou Kouyate and Taiwo Awoniyi are all sidelined along with Giulian Biancone, who has been ruled out for this season. Dean Henderson would not have been eligible to play against his parent club, but is still injured.
As for United, aside from Donny van de Beek – who is out this season – this game comes too early for Diogo Dalot to return, while Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial remain doubtful.
Form
After a poor start to their first season in the top flight, Forest – who drew 1-1 against Bournemouth in the league on Saturday – have lost just two of their last 11 games in all competitions: 4-1 at Championship Blackpool in the Premier League. FA Cup with a highly rotated team – and 3-0 at United in the Premier League. They hope to avoid a repeat of the last – and United’s last visit to the City Ground in 1999, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored a hat-trick from the bench in an 8-1 defeat.
In the meantime, United is trying to prevent it from going three games without a win for the first time under Ten Hag. In fact, Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Arsenal means they have gone without a win twice for the first time since the Dutchman’s first few games – after he drew 1-1 against Crystal Palace last Wednesday. Before that, they had won nine times in a row in all competitions.

Michael Oliver will be the referee for Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United.

VPN guide
If you’re out of the country for a Carabao Cup action, your domestic on-demand services are annoyingly down – the broadcaster knows where you are because of your IP address (boo!). You’ll be blocked from watching it, which isn’t ideal if you’ve paid for a subscription and still want to see the action without resorting to illegal feeds found on Reddit.
But help is available. To get around that, all you need to do is purchase a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it meets your broadcaster’s terms and conditions. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and the internet, meaning the service can’t find out where you are and won’t automatically block the service you paid for. All information that passes between them is fully encrypted – and that’s a result.
