NBA Scout puts Kings’ Hot Stretch in perspective

Could this be the season where the Sacramento Kings actually break their playoff drought? The Kings have not made the postseason in 16 years, which is now the longest playoff drought in NBA history. Desperate to break that streak, Sacramento has made some big strides in recent months.

Prior to the 2022 trade deadline, they acquired Domantas Sabonis from the Indiana Pacers. He’s a two-time All-Star, but when he parted ways with up-and-coming point guard Tyrese Haliburton, many people saw it as a losing trade for the Kings. In the off-season, they bought Kevin Huerter from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Justin Holiday, Maurice Harkless, and a future first-round pick.

However, the biggest move the Kings made was bringing in Mike Brown as head coach. For years this has been a franchise that hasn’t been able to stop opponents from scoring the ball. Their defense has prevented them from achieving any lasting success. Brown, a defensive-minded head coach, was a good choice to fix that.

However, it seems that the biggest impact he has is on offense. Spending six seasons as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors helped him grow and develop as a head coach, improving on the weaknesses he had while managing the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.

There is no LeBron James on this roster as he coached the Cavaliers for the first five seasons, but the Kings are finding great success. Currently 13-10 on the season, an NBA scout who spoke to NBA Analysis Network identified what helped the Kings turn things around this season.

‚ÄúThere is a lot to like about the way the kings approach things offensively. They added much-needed sharpshooting in the off-season and unleashed it completely, aside from better floor clearance for Fox or Sabonis to get to work. Significant layers for the attack of the kings were not there in the past, but are there now. Teams must play a chess match to solve Sabonis on the roll, while maintaining position to account for shooters when screening counters are deployed. Again, it’s a night and day difference from years ago where you really have to choose your poison.

Huerter fit perfectly into the lineup between De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis as a floor extender who opens things up for them to operate. He takes full advantage of the attention Fox and Sabonis draw, knocking down 42.6 percent of his 3-point attempts and scoring an average of three times per game.

Fox has also taken that next step in its development. When he shared the court with Haliburton it was a bit clumsy at times, but he is now playing the most efficient basketball of his career.

Sacramento is streaky this season, as they have already won and lost at least three games this season. Lucky for them, the winning streaks are longer than the losing ones, which is why they currently have a winning record. Finding some more consistency would go a long way, but everyone in that organization should be happy with how things have turned out so far in the Brown era.
