NBA Exec sees magic as the ideal suitor

NBA Analytics Network

The 2022-2023 NBA season has not gone according to plan for the Atlanta Hawks. They hoped that their off-season move to acquire Dejounte Murray would take them to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, but that has not been the case.

Atlanta has spent most of the season in the NBA Play-In Tournament range between the 7-12th seeds. They currently hold the eighth seed with a 26-26 record, three games behind the Miami Heat for the No. 6 spot, the last outside the play-in.

There’s no denying the talent on the Hawks’ roster, but things aren’t going their way. Part of that may be the tension between head coach Nate McMillan and his All-Star point guard Trae Young. What they labeled as a miscommunication led to Young sitting out a game earlier in the season and the two don’t seem to be on the same wavelength.

It was rumored that McMillan was considering resigning as a result. Some people have even wondered if Young will be the next young All-Star to request a trade from his team. If that happens, an NBA executive who spoke to NBA Analysis Network believes the Orlando Magic is a team to watch.

As the Hawks’ situation takes a turn for the worse and they start thinking about shaking things up, the Magic is a team that would make a lot of sense for Trae Young. They need a guard to go through things that can increase attack and it’s hard to imagine the market being super hot for a little guard. They have additional assets to trade and some intriguing young players Atlanta might want. The market may not be super hot for a smaller guard.

The Magic’s most recent rebuild is one that is starting to blossom. They play solid basketball, going 15-12 after starting the season with a brutal 5-20 stretch. The young players are producing, because Orlando has a very exciting young core.

Seven players on the team have averaged double figures per game this season. The eldest of that couple is Moritz Wagner, who is only 25. The potential for this team is huge as Gary Harris and Terrence Ross are the only rotation players over the age of 25.

Bringing in a dynamic guard like Young is something that could help take this roster to the next level. They have used many resources over the years to find a point guard, but none have come close to the level Young has shown.

While nothing will be happening anytime soon in terms of Young Trade, this is definitely something to keep an eye on. Another disappointing playoff performance from the Hawks could lead to some big changes during the 2023 offseason.
