Man United casually pushes Nottingham Forest aside

Manchester United scored three goals into Nottingham Forest’s net on Tuesday. It continues a run that now spans six dominant games in United’s league fixtures against the Tricky Trees.

Of course, this is the first time Forest have played Manchester United in a league since 1999, the last time the side played in the Premier League. However, looking back at the last six games between the two in the league after Tuesday, there is no game. In those six games, Manchester United conceded two goals for Nottingham Forest. Manchester United made 27.

This result, ultimately 3-0, has more implications for the modern league than for the historic rivalry between Forest and United. For the hosts, United are now fourth behind Tottenham Hotspur only one point. In addition, Erik ten Hag’s team still has a game credit against the Spurs and a four-point lead over its closest rival, Liverpool. For Nottingham Forest, the defeat dampens a strong 2022. The club deserved promotion. However, it looks like one of the favorites will drop back to the championship. Forest is one point away from the bottom of the table, even though it is one point away from safety.

Marcus Rashford leads United to victory over Nottingham Forest

The difference maker in this match was Marcus Rashford, who continued his sparkling form with a first class goal and assist on the day. His opening goal in the 19th minute was the epitome of perfection in the game. A corner kick to the ground 14 yards from goal had Rashford knocking his defender to the ball. He then fired the ball into the top left corner of the goal with ease past a helpless Wayne Hennessey.

The target is Rashford’s team leader fifth in the Premier League this season. While that may seem like a small total, four of those five are ultimately winning goals. The only one that isn’t comes from his brace against Arsenal.

Rashford provided the play on United’s second goal with a superb run before setting up Anthony Martial. Wayne Hennessey will want the try back as it slipped out of his hands and seeped into the net.

Forest thought it had a route back into play when Ryan Yates found the back of the net. However, after a lengthy VAR check, the game was ruled offside when the ball passed Willy Boly’s knee on its way in.

Manchester United shut down any chance of a Nottingham Forest comeback in the second half. Then, as time passed, Casemiro won back possession and Fred advanced on goal. The Brazilian pairing led to United’s third goal of the match.

The turn of the year

The Premier League is not quite half way through this season. Yet the extremes at each end of the table continue to separate. Nottingham Forest have another game that could lead to problems when they play against Chelsea next weekend. The match after, against Southampton, is huge for the permutations at the bottom of the table.

For United, it needs to keep getting these results against lower teams to keep pace with the teams above it. Newcastle United shows no sign of slowing down, even if the club has surprised a number of people with its performance this campaign. While Manchester City and Arsenal look a class above the rest, United are still in control of a top four finish under a first-year head coach. This despite the controversies, including a possible club sale and the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

United will play against Wolves, another team in the relegation zone, on New Year’s Eve.
