Jesse Lingard accuses United of ‘false promises’ ahead of reunion

Jesse Lingard makes his return to Old Trafford a little more interesting by proclaiming that Manchester United made ‘false promises’ during his time there. After spending over 20 years with Manchester United, Lingard signed for Nottingham Forest after his contract with the Red Devils expired. Forest travels to Manchester on Tuesday to take on United.
While it was bound to be an emotional day for Lingard anyway, he has made some interesting comments about his former club. The midfielder suggested that United had made him “false promises” during his last season in Manchester. Lingard played just 16 games in the Premier League for the Red Devils last campaign.
Player still doesn’t know why United prevented his chances
“I don’t know why I didn’t play, I don’t know what the problem was, whether it was political or whatever,” Lingard said. The Telegraph. “I still don’t have an answer to this day.”
“I’d rather someone out of respect for me being there for so long say to me ‘that’s why you’re not playing’, but I never understood that. They were false promises. I was training hard and I was sharp, I was ready to play those games. If you work hard in training and don’t play at the end, it’s very frustrating.”
These promises were made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former Manchester United manager is said to have given Lingard assurances that he would get enough playing time. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, the midfielder completed a successful season on loan at West Ham. Lingard has scored nine goals in just 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers.
“People wanted me to hit the ground running, like I did at West Ham, but sometimes it’s not like that,” Lingard continued. “I didn’t have a good pre-season and had a problem with my Achilles tendon while I was training alone [before the move]. I was trying to get through games and not feeling 100 percent, but I still wanted to fight for my team.
Lingard suffers from false promises at United
Nevertheless, Solkjaer never gave Lingard a place in his starting eleven that season. The Norwegian was fired at the end of November 2021 and replaced by Ralf Rangnick. Lingard’s playing time did not increase under Rangnick either. In fact, he made just two Premier League starts during the entire 2021/22 season.
Lingard now faces his former club for the first time since leaving last summer. He will certainly hope to show United what they may have been missing.
