IPL 2023: Jio Cinema faces backlash as fans complain of opening day app crashes and buffering issues

On the first day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Reliance-owned Jio Cinema, which has secured the digital streaming rights for the money-rich league, has been criticized on social media platforms for numerous complaints about the app’s slow buffering and crashing.

The app malfunctioned during the opening match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT), leaving many viewers disappointed as they were unable to watch the match without technical issues.

Notably, it marks the first time for two companies to broadcast the IPL matches on separate platforms in India and other regions. The TV rights have been acquired by Disney Star and they broadcast the games on the Star Sports network. Similarly, Viacom18 has acquired the digital rights and they are streaming the money-rich competition for free on their OTT platform Jio Cinema.

Here’s how fans reacted:

Jio Cinema, in particular, responded to users on Twitter, apologizing for the inconvenience experienced by fans. Jio said, “We apologize for this issue. We don’t want you to have this kind of experience. Please send us a private message with your operating system, app version and mobile number to help us resolve this issue. Thank you for your patience and we hope this issue resolved as quickly as possible.” In addition, their Twitter account advised some users to uninstall and reinstall the app.

Talking about the match, Gujarat led by Hardik Pandya won MS Dhoni‘s Chennai and recorded a thrilling five wicket win. Ruturaj Gaikwad took CSK to 178/7 thanks to his sensational 92 runs, including 4 fours and 9 sixes. However, Gujarat managed to chase the target in 19.2 overs, thanks Shubman Gill‘s half-century (63 from 36) and Rashid Khan’s all-round effort (2 wickets for 22 and 3-ball 10 run knock).
