Here’s who people have been betting on for the Golden Boot at each stage of the 2022 World Cup

The World Cup Golden Boot favorites change with every match – and the betting trends prove it.
Records from Entain show that as the tournament progressed, fans bet on several attackers for the prize. Some of the big favorites to be top scorers before a ball is kicked drop off the list each matchday as better players prefer players in better shape.
So who’s looking forward to taking that gong home?
Before the tournament
Indeed, the 2018 Golden Boot winner was the fan favorite to keep his prize before the tournament started.
Harry Kane was the punters’ choice, especially given his form for Tottenham going to Qatar. The second favorite by bets placed was Lionel Messi. Honestly, the UK didn’t go for dark horses, did they?
Third on the list? Kylian Mbappe. We get the idea.
Group stage: matchday 1
So despite getting two assists, Kane didn’t actually score in the first game against Iran in a match where England scored six. Incredibly, the Three Lions skipper fell out of the top three for Golden Boot betting, while Lionel Messi jumped into first place.
That’s somewhat surprising considering Argentina lost their first match, but Messi must have done enough to convince the victors. After Messi, England’s hero with two goals in that opening match, Bukayo Saka, was the second most betting player to win the Golden Boot.
Kylian Mbappé was third on the list.
Group stage: matchday 2
It may have come as a surprise to see Richarlison start the World Cup in ninth place, but two goals in Brazil’s opening match against Serbia saw him become the betting favorite for the Golden Boot.
More bets were placed on the Tottenham striker than anyone else during the second day of play – Mbappé, meanwhile, jumped to second spot for that prize. Olivier Giroud became third favorite at this stage after two goals against Australia.
Group stage: matchday 3
All about Mbappé from this point on. The French ace was unstoppable against Denmark on matchday 2, so when France rested him for matchday 3, he became the overwhelming favorite for the Golden Boot ahead of a clash with Poland in the next round.
Richarlison was still a big option for many bets on the gong, while Cody Gakpo – after three goals in three games – jumped to third place.
Last-16
Two more goals for Mbappé – it comes as no surprise that the PSG striker became the overwhelming favorite for the Golden Boot at this point.
Again, more bets for the gong went on Mbappé than anyone else at this point in the league. However, after a lavish performance against Australia, Lionel Messi jumped to second place.
Richarlison could not be written off either. He was third favorite at this point.
