England World Cup 2022 selection: Gareth Southgate’s players will meet France in the quarter-finals

England have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup thanks to a resounding 3-0 victory over reigning African champions Senegal in the last 16.
The Three Lions are the joint highest scorers in Qatar, with 12 goals from their four games to date. That was helped in part by Iran’s 6-2 hammering in their opening game, but Gareth Southgate’s side really do look more attacking than they have in recent tournaments. A more ballistic 4-3-3 formation for the league’s opening games has been well received by the fanbase, although a move to a back-three remains an option against the top sides.
Southgate is ashamed of attacking riches and eager to let go of as much of it as possible. Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford led the way, with three goals each, but a further six players managed to find the back of the net: Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham. The latter, still only 19, is the most outstanding young player in Qatar.
However, it has not all been smooth sailing for England, who lost Ben White and Raheem Sterling during the tournament for personal reasons. A draw with the USA also highlighted their occasional lack of sharpness and, as is always the case with England, the fans never turn far from the team and coach.
They will meet France in the last eight: undoubtedly their toughest test since Italy in the Euro 2020 final. They lost that game, but the current team seems much stronger in quality and depth.

England Manager: Gareth Southgate
Few have done “the impossible job” with the grace of Gareth Southgate. Yet the unlikely fashion icon favors pragmatism over individual genius and as such his tactical acumen is under scrutiny more than ever after meek, avoidable defeats at Russia 2018 and Euro 2020 – not to mention the horrific demotion of the Nations League this summer.

How many players can England bring to the 2022 World Cup?
It has been announced that teams of 26 players will return for the World Cup in Qatar, an expansion of the usual 23-man squads.
National managers were allowed to bring 26 players to last summer’s European Championship at a major tournament for the first time as a special measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the crowds at the matches, the extensive selections have returned this time.
