Dempsey calls this USMNT the best football generation ever

Former US Men’s National Team (USMNT) forward Clint Dempsey has called the current crop of players in the national squad the country’s “Golden Generation.”

The 39-year-old former Fulham star who is now a broadcaster believes Gregg Berhalter’s side can boast world-class talent which could see them go on a deep run in the World Cup.

Dempsey breaks down the team’s strengths

Speaking to former Fulham teammate Danny Murphy, Dempsey discussed his goal against England in the 2010 World Cup and drew comparisons between the star-studded England squad and the current USMNT squad.

Dempsey said, “‘We had big players in smaller teams, now you have Americans in big teams, but they’re not the main players. The best are young, 24 years old or younger. Christian Pulisic [Chelsea]Weston McKennie [Juventus]Brenden Aaronson [Leeds]Tyler Adams [Leeds]Gio Reina [Dortmund]Sergino Dest [AC Milan] and Yunus Musah [Valencia].”

Dempsey also gave his opinion on the US’s chances in Qatar, analyzing the group in which his country has been placed alongside England, Wales and Iran.

He said, “It has a Golden Generation feel. They have a lot of potential, but there is more youth than experience. The USA usually plays 4-3-3 and it suits us well to take on better teams that we can counter. When opponents sit back it’s harder to break them down so England might be a better fit for us than the game against Wales.”

Our strongest point is the midfield. Adams, McKennie and Musah can move around just fine. They can put out fires – and move forward. The biggest question marks are who will be our goalkeeper, main striker and central defender for Walker Zimmerman.”

The former Fulham star said he was impressed by Leeds United midfielder Brendan Aaronson whose energetic performances in the center of the park and attacking third drew high praise.

Dempsey also claimed that the USMNT is stronger than Wales, but was cautious about the wind.

President sends message of support

Earlier this morning, President Joe Biden called the USMNT to wish them luck before the tournament kicks off.

The USA are expected to play a free-flowing style of football with McKennie, Pulisic and Aaronson pulling the strings in the middle of the park with Gio Reyna, who is back to full fitness and destined to shine in the highly anticipated tournament.

Berhalter’s team will face Wales on Monday in their opening game at the World Cup.
