Charles Barkley gives national TV broadcast of Epic Lakers

NBA Analytics Network

The Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Boston Celtics during Tuesday night’s NBA action in a game not many thought would be competitive. Those folks looked like they were going to be tied for the first half, as Boston had a 15-point lead and led the game by a whopping 20 points. However, the script was flipped in the second half of the match.

The Lakers stormed back, as they led by a whopping 13 points in the fourth quarter with 4:25 left in the game. Boston turned it back on at that point, as they defeated Los Angeles 17–4 for the remainder of the game to force overtime. In extra time, the Celtics beat the Lakers 12-8 to come away with a 122-118 victory.

It was another devastating loss to Los Angeles, who have been playing better lately but are struggling to finish games. They’ve been beaten multiple times this season by buzzer beaters or teams making late game runs, as what happened on Tuesday night is nothing new.

Because they are as recognizable to a team as the Lakers, they get a lot of nationally televised games no matter how poorly they perform. Now 11-16 on the season, the Lakers are closer to last place in the Western Conference than a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament.

Many people are tired of watching them play, including Charles Barkley, an analyst at TNT. He ripped into the Lakers, ranting about how bad a team they are and questioning why, despite their poor performance, they get the attention they do.

“The Lakers stink. You force us all to show them all the time that they will be good… There is a conspiracy.’

The Lakers are on TV because they essentially print money for the league. They have multiple marketable stars in LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook who have fans all over the world. But Barkley does make some good points.

There is no losing team in the league that is often talked about here, referring to how little is said about the Washington Wizards, the 12th-ranked team in the Eastern Conference. But the Wizards aren’t a national brand like purple and gold and while they have solid players like Bradley Beal, Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma, they don’t compare to the star power of the Lakers.

Unfortunately, Barkley is not alone in his feelings. All of these nationally televised games are decided in the off-season, but basketball fans would like to see other teams play well this season and get a little more airtime on the struggling Lakers.
