Brighton dumps Liverpool out of the FA Cup

Brighton dumped holders Liverpool out of the FA Cup on Sunday night thanks to an injury-time goal from Karou Mitoma at the Amex Stadium.
Harvey Elliot’s strike in the 30th minute had put Liverpool ahead before Lewis Dunk’s deflected goal from Tariq Lamptey’s attack restored the tie nine minutes later.
Consecutive wins for Brighton
This was Brighton’s second successive victory over Liverpool following their 3-0 victory over the Reds in the Premier League two weeks ago.
Both teams started the game in typical cup-tie fashion with end-to-end stuff. Given Liverpool’s recent troubles, Brighton were announced as the pre-match favourites.
The Seagulls are in fine form in the Premier League and are sixth in the standings. However, it was Jürgen Klopp’s side that looked the better of the two sides, and Mohammed Salah should have given his side the lead in the 25e minute.
The Egyptian striker dragged his shot inches wide after Elliott Salah put through it with an inch-perfect pass.
However, Salah recovered five minutes later and turned to Elliot with a nice weighted pass from the right wing.
The 19-year-old Elliot made his first shot on target, which hit the outstretched hand of Brighton keeper Jason Steele before rolling into the back of the net.
However, Roberto De Zerbi’s side held their own and soon leveled the score in the 39th minute. After a corner from the left, Lamptey controlled his shot which went wide before Dunk got an unlikely deflection that wrong-footed Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker in goal to make it 1–1 heading into half time.
Brighton came out on top of the two sides after the restart and should have taken the lead in the 55e minute.
Solly March put a ball in after some good work from Mitouma, but Pascal Gross couldn’t contain his shot and his effort went well over the crossbar for the chance to beg.
Alisson then denied March from just eight yards in the 71st minute with a stunning reflex save that bounced off Brighton’s fullback on his way out.
Mitoma delivers a winning performance.
However, it was Mitoma who scored the winning goal for Brighton in the 92nd minute with an astonishing effort.
Pervis Estupinan’s cross from the far post was well controlled by the Japanese forward before he lobbed the ball over Joe Gomez to shoot his volley past Alisson.
VAR was consulted to rule out offside from the build-up, and the goal stood, sending the home fans into a panic.
For Liverpool, however, their season is heading south. The Reds are out of the FA Cup and are 9th in the Premier League standings, 10 points clear of a Champions League berth and Klopp needs to sort out the issues with his teams before they face holders Real Madrid in the Premier League in two weeks. UEFA Champions League.
After the game, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson said, ‘It’s bitterly disappointing. I thought it was a real cup game – end to end, both teams had chances. Today we were slightly better than two weeks ago, but at the end of the day we are out of the cup; it’s so disappointing.”
