Bombshell details of Myles Turner contract talks

NBA Analytics Network

The Indiana Pacers have some big decisions to make in the coming weeks and months. Easily the greatest will be what to do with the starting center Myles Turner. He’s been involved in NBA trade rumors for years, but the franchise could change its stance if he plays out of contract.

As shared by Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Pacers and Turner investigate a possible expansion. The two sides in talks shouldn’t be too surprising given how well Turner has played this season now that he’s healthy and playing at the point guard position along with an upgrade.

Turner, like many of his teammates, has benefited from the addition of Tyrese Haliburton in the backcourt. Haliburton was acquired from the Sacramento Kings ahead of the trade deadline in the blockbuster Domantas Sabonis, and Turner’s production this season has been taken to another level.

He averages 16.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.6 steals and 2.1 blocks in 29.4 minutes per game. The points and rebounds would be a career high, while also having the best shooting season of his career, with 54 percent of his shots overall and 41.3 percent from 3-point range.

As shared by Charania, Turner has a chance to raise money if the two sides agree an extension during the season, as Indiana remains under the salary cap and has money to spend.

“The Pacers have the option to renegotiate and renew with Turner because they currently have about $25 million in salary cap. The Pacers may offer Turner up to an additional $19.1 million this year on top of his $18 million salary to give him his individual cap of $37.1 million for the 2022-2023 season alone, then cut his salary in the next seasons of a possible new contract.”

If that’s something the Pacers are really open to, it would be hard to imagine Turner turning down a contract like that. He puts himself in a position to raise money as a free agent and if Indiana is willing to pay him nearly the maximum money, Turner would have to think long and hard about accepting such an offer.

While extension talks are underway, it should also be noted that Indiana is keeping its options open. Renewal negotiations are in the early stages and the team isn’t closing the door on a trade centered on Turner as they aren’t cornering themselves.

If no renewal or trade is agreed, Turner will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. His market would likely be robust, as his skills are one that teams covet in the mid-table position.
