Bayern beat Dortmund to Bundesliga title after thrilling match day

Bayern Munich clinched their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title after a thoroughly incredible day of play on Saturday, which saw Borussia Dortmund lead. The German giants won 2-1 against Köln, while Borussia Dortmund only managed a draw against Mainz. These results saw Bayern jump over BVB to narrowly triumph in the German league.

Dortmund started the day with a two-point lead over their rivals prior to Saturday, but Bayern had the much better goal difference. This meant that if Bayern beat Koln, Dortmund also had to win. However, BVB could also have won the title with a loss, as long as they had help from Koln.

The Bavarians are only eight minutes into the game

The reigning German champions got off to a fast start with a goal in the eighth minute of their match. Kingsley Coman put his club ahead with a stunning strike from the edge of the Cologne penalty area. The Frenchman received a pass from Leroy Sané on the flank, moved in and shot past the goalkeeper with a nice curling. It was his eighth Bundesliga goal of the season and certainly the most important.

Things quickly went from bad to worse for Dortmund. The BVB went down 1-0 just minutes after the Coman goal. Andreas Hanche-Olsen squeezed in a header from a tricky angle to put Mainz ahead. Dortmund, however, got the chance to quickly get a goal back via a penalty kick. Nevertheless, Sebastian Haller saw his effort saved to keep the score at 1-0 for Mainz. It was Haller’s first penalty of the season for the club.

Mainz doubled their unexpected lead against BVB a few minutes later. Karim Onisiwo somehow found himself free in the Dortmund penalty area and headed past Gregor Kobel again. The keeper was able to get hold of the shot, but the ball twisted over the post and over the line. It was a disastrous first half for the BVB.

Bayern and Dortmund flip-flop in Bundesliga title race

With Bayern still ahead midway through the second half, Dortmund gave themselves a little hope with a goal in the 69th minute. Raphael Guerreiro fired a well placed shot off the post and into the net after joining substitute Gio Reyna. The goal gave BVB a lifeline in his title dreams. However, they would have to score two more goals or hope that Koln got one back against Bayern.

Things got even more interesting after the referees awarded Koln a penalty kick with only 10 minutes left to play. Serge Gnabry was deemed to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Dejan Ljubičić stepped in and leveled the score. If this result holds, Dortmund would win the Bundesliga title regardless of the result against Mainz.

Nevertheless, Jamal Musiala scored to put Bayern back on top with just one minute left on the clock.

The Germany international picked up the ball on the edge of the Köln penalty area and fired a low blow into the back of the net. The goal would ultimately prove to be the title-winning shot for the German giants.

Haller would equalize the score against Mainz late in extra time, but that would not be enough. Dortmund and Bayern finished the season on points, but Bayern outscored their rivals on goal difference.
